How To Dress for a Military Ball

The privilege of going to a military ball can be a pretty special thing, but it comes with a specific dress code to follow. Generally, you should be as formal as possible–a full-length dress, nothing too revealing, no overly loud colors, and the best table manners you’ve ever displayed. In this blog, we’ll explain how to dress for a military ball and how you can pair it with military colors to make a truly stunning combo.

Formal, Full-length Dresses

Military balls are as traditional as it gets, and attire is a big part of that tradition. As a female guest, your best (and often only) option is a full-length, formal dress like these options. We recommend classic silhouettes like the A-line or ball gown–both make for perfect choices with just the right kind of elegance and a touch of grandeur for the formal atmosphere. When it comes to fabric, pick your favorite between luxurious materials like silk or satin. For color, avoid anything too flashy or loud. Military balls are respectful occasions, so classic colors like black, navy, burgundy, or white are always a safe bet. We also recommend exploring softer neutrals like champagne or silver–bold colors and busy patterns are best left for another event. The goal is to look polished and put-together, complementing the formality of the military uniforms and the event itself (we’ll cover color combos in more detail in the next section).

Also, you’ll have to follow any dress code specifics you might receive with the invitation. Military balls sometimes lean towards a stricter “white tie” dress code, though more relaxed options are usually the norm. If you’re unsure, err on the side of formality and choose a dress that exudes polish and respect for the occasion.

Military Colors and Combos That Go With Each

Though there isn’t too much flexibility in terms of dress length at any military ball, you’ve actually got a bunch of creative options when it comes to incorporating the host branch’s colors as a thoughtful touch.

Army

For the Army’s classic combination of black and gold, a black evening gown with gold jewelry or a black dress with a gold belt or clutch will stun like nothing else.

You can also consider a deep forest green dress reminiscent of the Army’s familiarity with nature and camouflage.

Navy

The Navy’s maritime authority is complemented perfectly with a stunning navy blue dress. Pair it with glamorous silver jewelry and heels to reflect the Navy’s tradition or, if you prefer a lighter look, a dress in a soft seafoam green or powder blue like the calming ocean alongside the Navy’s crisp uniforms.

Marines

The Marines’ feature bold red and gold colors and so demand a confident and striking ensemble to go along with them. Grab a red floor-length dress as your main showstopper and polish it a step further with red accessories like a necklace or heels. If red feels a bit much, we’d also recommend you consider a crisp white dress with gold jewelry that goes nicely with the Marines’ dress whites and medals.

Air Force

Take inspiration from the Air Force’s skyward mission with a dress in a beautiful shade of Air Force blue. We love Air Force blue for its ever-lasting polish and professional aesthetic that complements the Air Force’s uniforms better than anything.

Once again, for a lighter and more ethereal feel, you can try a dress in silver or pale lavender that represents the vastness of the sky the airmen fly in.

Remember the Dos and Don’ts of Military Balls

These balls are a celebration of service and tradition–attending one requires a touch of etiquette for everyone to follow:

DO: Dress to impress! As we discussed, formal attire is expected, with floor-length gowns for women and suits or tuxedos for men, and there may also be a strict dress code. Arrive early to mingle during cocktail hour, be respectful during speeches and toasts, and don’t forget to have a little fun!

DON’T: Overdo the accessories. Keep jewelry classic and elegant. Avoid overly revealing clothing or anything that would detract from the formal atmosphere. Excessive drinking is a big no-no. Military balls are social events, but remember to maintain a professional demeanor throughout. Oh, and no matter how boring it may seem, do not leave during a speech or toast, no matter what.
